The peninsula of Sirmione, approx. km 4 long, is much frequented because of its thermal spas. The peninsula has a luxuriant vegetation of olives, cypresses, laurels and magnolias. The remarkable Roman buildings, the tombstones, the capitals and other remains, testify to the ancient importance of Sirmione.
The prosperity of Sirmione, besides the Roman period, was particularly demonstrated under the domination of the Scaliger and of the Venetian Republic.
In the 13th century, the Scaligers built the Castle or Rocca Scaligera, erected as a fortress inside the ancient walls surrounding the Medieval Village.
Presently the Castle is said to be the most beautiful of the surviving Castles of the Scaligerian Age.
